  • Glossary on Local Governance Used in Japanese Official Gazettes

Project on dissemination of information on local governance system and its operation of Japan

The main comparative tables are compiled by GRIPS in cooperation with CLAIR as an integral part of the “Project on Overseas Dissemination of Information on Local Governance System of Japan and its Operation”. The Official Gazette English Edition was issued from April 1946 (Vol. No. 1) during the occupation until April 1952 (Vol. No. 1828). The follow-up to this was that specialist terms concerned with local governance were picked up from the Japanese edition of the Official Gazette, and matched with terms from the Official Gazette English Edition. The result of this was the compilation of a bilingual, English-Japanese glossary of specialist terms from the Official Gazette (arranged in the order of the Japanese syllabary and in the order of laws) produced in fiscal 2005. On that occasion, notes were made in the remarks column regarding translated terms that needed further scrutiny and cases of inconsistency in translations. In a supplementary edition (fiscal 2006), additional to the edition of the previous year, Japanese terms and English terms were matched, and 134 new terms were added. Furthermore, a revised edition was issued in fiscal 2007, combining the edition of 2005 and the supplementary edition of 2006, and was arranged so as to be much more user-friendly.
