Title: China’s One Belt One Road Initiative in Global Historical Perspective

Abstract: China’s rise as an economic power bears some resemblances to previous examples of economic development and brings East Asia into a larger geo-political context with an Asian power at the center of the dynamics for the first time.  At the same time, China’s current multi-dimensional economic outreach through its One Belt One Road initiative creates an unprecedented set of political and economic possibilities and problems.  A country the spatial size of the EU with a far larger population is becoming, along with the US, a third political and economic power.  The relations among the three will affect not only our global economic future, but also set out the context within which addressing global geopolitical challenges will end up being engaged.
